Meet Debra Skeen from Music for the Brain.
Music for the Brain demonstrates the health and wellbeing benefits of singing and releases the feel-good hormones endorphins and oxytocin. One study found that singing can relieve stress and boost the immune system. Another report concluded that it helped those who join in singing to cope with chronic pain. In the main, the singing sessions combine useful tools for breathing and posture whilst enabling those involved to improve mood and confidence.
Debra uses music as therapy and works with people with Dementia, Parkinson’s and anyone who may feel isolated in the community.
As well as providing stimulating sessions in care homes and day care centres, Debra leads two Sing to Beat Parkinson’s choirs (Lewes and Hailsham) and a daytime community choir in Lewes. She also runs daytime ukulele classes and has a private singing practice in Ringmer.
